Nicaragua invites Indonesian Businessmen to invest in the construction of the Nicaragua Canal which is planned to exceed the width of the Panama Canal and connects the two oceans surrounding the country. This is conveyed by the Nicaraguan Foreign Minister, Samuel Santos Lopez, in a press conference with the Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty M. Natalegawa at the Foreign Ministry Office, Pejambon.

Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Samuel Santos Lopez invites Indonesian private companies to participate in the implementation of the canal project.

"Currently the draft of the law on the canal construction project has been approved by the Parliament," he added.

Nicaraguan President himself will conduct a feasibility study by taking into consideration the natural environment issues, social issues, and its implications for the local community.

Besides the canal construction, Nicaraguan Foreign Minister has also expressed his interest in cooperating in the plantation investment, especially in palm oil processing.

Foreign Minister Santos is also interested in the empowerment and development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), and technical cooperation, especially in the development of science and technology as well as post-graduate education.

This is proven with his courtesy visit to the Indonesian Minister of Cooperatives and Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Deputy Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, as well as meeting with palm oil businessmen who are members of the Indonesian Palm Oil Producers Association (GAPKI).

The visit of Foreign Minister Samuel Santos Lopez to Jakarta has given the opportunity for the establishment of Indonesia - Nicaragua Bilateral Consultation Forum and the signing of Memorandum of Understanding on Visa Exemption for bearers of Diplomatic and Official Passports.

"Besides being an official visit, this visit is full of historical values,” said Foreign Minister, Marty Natalegawa at the meeting.

This is because Foreign Minister Santos’ visit is the first Nicaraguan Foreign Minister’s visit since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries through the signing of the Joint Communiqué at the United Nations, New York, in 1988.

Since then, the relations between the two countries continue to progress at the regional level.

This is proven with Nicaraguan active participation in the sixth FEALAC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Bali some time ago (June 13-14, 2013).

"Last week Foreign Minister Lopez also made a significant contribution in FEALAC", said the Indonesian Foreign Minister.

The bilateral relations between Indonesia and Nicaragua has continued to develop, especially in the inter-regional level.

Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa also suggests that there are tremendous opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.

The potential to develop bilateral relations between the two countries can be seen in the increasing trade value within the last five years.

It is recorded that there is an increase which exceeds 100% of the trade value in 2008 (US$ 9.

2 million) compared to the figure in 2012 (US$ 21.

7 million).

Several excellent products which still constitute the Indonesian mainstay products are vegetable oil products, tobacco and tobacco products, paper and paperboard, vehicles, manmade staple fibers and electronic equipment with a value of US$ 20.

4 million.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's imports from Nicaragua, among others, are electronic equipment and tobacco and tobacco products with a value of US$ 1.

33 million.

In the meeting, the two ministers discussed various opportunities in the economic sector.

Foreign Minister Samuel Santos Lopez also expressed his intention to learn about Indonesian tourism industry which is considered very good.

On the other hand, the Indonesian Foreign Minister also praised the resilience and spirit of Nicaragua which managed to survive in difficult times and currently it is a country whose economy continues to grow and is moving in a positive direction.
