MERCOSUR countries and their relation with Asian markets: strategies for the global integration

Within the framework of the Conference: MERCOSUR countries and their relation with Asian markets: strategies for the global integration, held on 12 November 2024, organized by UCU Business School, Department of Economy of FCS-UDELAR, and Programa Pharos de la ACADECO, Renato Coelho Baumann (IPEA - Brasil) argued that, due to the economic relevance of China, this country is a natural partner for a trade agreement with the MERCOSUR. Notwithstanding, he highlighted that a comprehensive agreement must go beyond the tariff reduction, by comprising non-tariff barriers and promoting investments in the region. He also pointed out that a greater link with China could encourage the creation of regional value chains, by reinforcing the competitiveness of the bloc as a whole.
