Viet Nam and Uruguay have potential to enhance cooperation in economics, trade and investment.

The two countries can support each other in agriculture, tele-communication, education, science, technology, culture and sports.

Both Deputy PM Vu Van Ninh and Uruguayan Vice President Danilo Astori agreed with the statement during their talks in Montevideo on December 9.

They discussed measures to boost bilateral ties in the future, maintain delegation exchanges at all levels and promote representative agencies’ role and a political consulting mechanism between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs.

The two leaders agreed to establish a joint governmental committee on economics, trade and investment in accordance with the framework agreement on trade and investment, which has recently been concluded while continuing negotiations to foster cooperation in each field to lay down a legal foundation for long-term, stable cooperation.

Both sides committed to creating favorable conditions for imports and exports of each country and promoting each country’s role in bridging the other to Southeast Asia and South America.

In addition, they affirmed to continue furthering coordination and mutual support at international organizations and multi-lateral forums, including the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the Non-Aligned Movement and the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation, contributing to improving each country’s position and to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the two regions and the world.

Earlier, Deputy PM Ninh met with President Jose Mujica and Foreign Minister Luis Almagro, and witnessed the signing of cooperative documents between the two Governments, including a framework agreement on trade and investment and an agreement on the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of tax evasion.

Minister Almagro presented the guest with a note on the Uruguay Government’s recognition of Vietnam’s market economy.

President Mujica congratulated Viet Nam on its great achievements in the renewal process, saying that Uruguay attaches importance to promoting friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Viet Nam in its Look Asia policy.

Deputy PM Ninh expressed his gratitude to the President and Uruguayan people’s support during the war time and Uruguay’s recognition of Viet Nam’s market economy.

During the visit, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam and Deputy Minister of Finance Do Hoang Anh Tuan met with representatives from Uruguayan businesses and their association to introduce and discuss trade and investment opportunities in Viet Nam.

On December 10, Deputy PM Ninh attended a ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations (1993-2013) and the launching of a set of post stamps with the image of General Vo Nguyen Giap.

The delegation left Montevideo on December 10 to conclude the visit after visiting the Zonamerica free trade zone.
