VM Fachir: Indonesian Leadership in MIKTA Brings Change

In the-5-countries meeting of Mexico, South Korea, Turkey, Australia, and Indonesia, the Indonesian Foreign Minister said that during the Indonesian leadership in MIKTA, Indonesia continued to encourage concrete programs and activities, in addition to expanding MIKTA's involvement with other stakeholders, such as creative and digital economic actors, as well as religious leaders.

These activities which all took place in Indonesia also supported various high-level and foreign ministerial meetings which focused on consulting the latest multilateral issues. As discussed at the level of high officials and former Foreign Minister, MIKTA FMM-14 discussed issues including joint efforts in realizing the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs), strengthening multilateral partnerships and the role of the United Nations, regional and international security, migration, and the issue of the Korean Peninsula.

Regarding the issue of global security, the Indonesian Foreign Minister obtained a number of inputs and views from the MIKTA countries as a contribution to Indonesia's thoughts as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council 2019-2020. Responding to the growing security issues, MIKTA agreed to continue to support enduring reconciliation and peace efforts on the Korean Peninsula. In addition, it also discussed the various new challenges in overcoming the threat of terrorism which have utilized the rapid development of technology. For this reason, it is necessary to strengthen international cooperation in dealing with terrorism, including through a soft approach by empowering religious leaders.

The meeting of the 14- MIKTAS’s Foreign Minister was also important because it was the last meeting of MIKTA under the Indonesian leadership. At MIKTA FMM-14, Dr. A.M. Fachir officially handed over the leadership of MIKTA to Mexico, which was represented by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Mr. Julián Ventura Valero. Also present at this meeting were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of South Korea, Mr. Tae Ho Lee; Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Mr. Faruk Kaymakçi; and the Australian Senior Official for MIKTA, Dr. Justin Lee.

On this occasion, Mexico’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs also expressed his appreciation for Indonesia's role as a constructive and effective consensus builder at the international level.

The MIKTA cooperation forum (Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia) was first conceived at an informal meeting of the G20 Foreign Minister in Los Cabos, Mexico, February 2012.
